Unique items to include in a Thanksgiving gift basket

The first decision to make when purchasing a thanksgiving gift basket is what kind of vessel the items will be placed in. Put the items in something that is reusable. Baskets are very pretty and can be reused, but how many do you need? Chances are your recipient already has received a basket or two. Think creative and come up with a new idea. Think of the person getting your gift. If they are gardeners, perhaps a new carrier for garden tools. A cook would enjoy a new huge bowl for mixing or arranging. A new reusable grocery bag, the ones that are replacing plastic or paper bags. Make the decision personal as a token to the person you are thanking.

Because this is a thanksgiving gift include thank you cards and stamps. Along with a personal note explaining how special this person means to you. Include a list of the many things they have done for you and your family during the year. A small inspirational book or a subscription to a favorite magazine will remind them of you all year round.

Live plants that bring good luck such as a small rubber tree plant. Along with the plant write a story detailing the legend behind the plant.

Purchase a gift pass to a local museums, or a Christmas show. Or even better, make a personal card inviting them to join you for a movie or show, your treat. Make the invitation in the form of a coupon with no expiration date.

Small items that have meaning for the family; an apron for the cook- hat or gloves for the kids that walk your dog, a new dog leash for the new puppy next door. Bath salts or smelly soap for the recovering or just overworked mom.

Popcorn of different colors and flavors. Legend has it that the Pilgrims had popcorn at the first thanksgiving in 1621. Chief Massasoit's brother, Quadequina, brought deerskin bags of corn already popped to the dinner. Include the written legend with your gift.

Many families watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade on television. An addition to your basket could be a balloon. Make it different, a punching balloon. These are stronger balloons that don't pop so easily and come with an attached wrist loop. The child puts the loop around the wrist and punches at the balloon. It is good practice for eye/hand coordination. And will amusing them for hours.

Foods are always a welcome gift, but think about the person receiving the gift. Don't give a basket filled with wine and cheese, and appetizer type foods to the elderly couple. Choose foods they can use. Foods that would be welcome on a snowy evening when they can't get out to purchase something. Canned Ham, a complete meal in a box, expensive soups, beef stews, or can fruits will make their evening special.
