Autumn Flower
I let her get in front of me
In the grocery line.
Her perfume smelled so sweet.
A hint of harvest wine.
Her sweet scent reminded me
of moments I forgot.
She turned back and smiled,
My mind was in a knot.
I watched her put the items
On the counter for the clerk.
Silver strands hid her eyes
Her lips still had that perk.
She wore a woman's blush
That washed away the years.
I wondered who she was.
Whoever were her peers.
Confident and unhurried,
She counted off her toll.
Then she turned smiling
Warm mark left on my soul.
Her gliding walk so nimble.
A head held up so high.
I wish I'd said hello
Instead of just a sigh.
Hurried to the parking lot.
Out in a cold fall shower.
Gone my chance to meet that
Timeless Autumn flower.
