Does God really love people?

Does God really love people? Many atheists argue that if God existed he would be evil and heartless by presenting quotes from the bible where God condoned unpleasant things like rape, murder, and slavery. Likewise many Christians also turn to the bible to support their idea of a God of love, but tend to use more pleasant verses to make their argument. The thing that these two lines of thought have in common is that they both make unnecessary assumptions. As fun as quoting the bible can be for both atheists and Christians, a more objective approach is necessary for exploring the question.

If God exists (large emphasis on "if") there is still no evidence to support the visitations and supernatural occurrences religions claim. The very concept of faith of which religion is seeded upon does not provide any proof whatsoever to support their specific definitions of the nature of deity. To answer the question we obviously need to assume the existence of God, but beyond that let's try to only use logic, reason, and evidence to dissect the issue.

Compared to the massive size of the universe we are incomprehensibly small. Our sun is just one out of 1022 stars we know of. If there is a God, it is nothing short of an arrogant assumption to say it is primarily concerned with the affairs of the human race. Although many religious people claim their God answers prayers and causes miracles, there is absolutely no evidence to support them.

What most often happens is that theists attribute anything that seems unlikely as being a miracle, or act of God. For example, if a child survives a horrific car crash, a theist may say that the outcome was unlikely, and therefore God intervened. What they don't understand is that just because something seems unlikely, it doesn't mean it will never happen within the bounds of natural laws. A child surviving a bad accident may be unlikely, but if it happens it happens because the events that transpired were favorable for the child. Perhaps if the car hit the lamppost at a different angle, or a different model of car was involved the child wouldn't be so fortunate. It's also important to note that for every child that survives a horrific car crash there is one that dies in a seemingly less severe accident. The unbiased and often seemingly cruel laws of nature are the only explanation for the nature of daily events on earth. This leads us to believe that if there is a God, he/she does not intervene in our lives.
