Magic the Gathering card analysis: Cenn's Tactician

"Cenn's Tactician" is a 1/1 white kithkin soldier printed as an uncommon for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Morningtide." This is one of the cards printed in Morningtide that promote synergy of one theme of creature and one sub-theme of creature. In the case of Cenn's Tactician, it promotes synergy with kithkins and soldiers. In this respect, you may want to make a kithkin and soldier themed deck. Depending on what cards you put in your deck, Cenn's Tactician becomes a vital card.

The converted mana cost for Cenn's Tactician is one. You need one white mana to bring Cenn's Tactician from your hand and onto the battlefield. For what Cenn's Tactician can do, the converted mana cost is very much worth it. Paying one white mana for a creature with two great abilities is a great price.

What does Cenn's Tactician do in the first place?

The first ability lets you pay one white mana and tap Cenn's Tactician. Doing so lets you put a +1/+1 counter on a target soldier creature. Make sure the solider has neither Shroud nor Protection from White.

Each creature you control that has a +1/+1 counter can double block. It means your creatures can block an additional creature if they have a +1/+1 counter on it.

The question has to be asked: How do you exploit this ability for your own benefit?

There is one way to do this: Make a deck built around soldiers. Luckily, most soldiers let alone white soldiers have low mana costs. One way you can use the two abilities would be to bring "Kinsbaile Borderguard" onto the battlefield. When Kinsbaile Borderguard comes onto the battlefield, it gets X +1/+1 counters in which X is equal to the number of kithkins under your control.

Should it get sent to the graveyard, you put X 1/1 white kithkin soldier tokens onto the battlefield. X is equal to the number of +1/+1 counters on the Kinsbaile Borderguard. With Cenn's Tactician, you can gradually increase the number of +1/+1 counters on the Kinsbaile Borderguard. Should it get sent to the graveyard, you get to put a few more 1/1 white kithkin solders onto the battlefield.

You can also combine this with "Captain of the Watch." Captain of the Watch gives all other soldiers +1/+1 and Vigilance. You can use Cenn's Tactician to gradually beef up those soldier creatures.

Overall, Cenn's Tactician is great once you get a bunch of soldiers onto the battlefield. However, it is important that you manage to bring it onto the battlefield early in the game. If you are building a soldier deck, this is one worth looking into.
