Magic the Gathering card analysis: Fendeep Summoner

Created on: October 24, 2009

"Fendeep Summoner" is a 3/5 black treefolk shaman printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Morningtide." This is one of the cards that promote tribal synergy between treefolk and/or shaman. You can use this in a treefolk-themed or a shaman-themed deck. In a treefolk deck, you can definitely get a lot of use out of the Fendeep Summoner.

The converted mana cost for the Fendeep Summoner is five. You will need one black mana and four colorless mana to bring Fendeep Summoner onto the battlefield. For what the Fendeep Summoner can do, the converted mana cost is very well worth it for the most part. In this respect, you may want to primarily build around treefolk and have shaman and warrior subtypes to help out.

What does Fendeep Summoner do in the first place?

You can tap the Fendeep Summoner to turn two target Swamps into 3/5 treefolk warriors until the end of the turn. They are treefolk warriors in addition to their other types. In a sense, you can tap Fendeep Summoner to create two creatures that can attack and/or block.

One can ask: How do you get the most out of that ability?

In a treefolk deck, you can use the legendary treefolk known as "Doran, the Siege Tower." When Doran, the Siege Tower is on the battlefield, creatures deal damage equal to their toughness instead of their power. In this respect, those 3/5 treefolk warriors that Fendeep Summoner makes the Swamps into can deal five points of combat damage. If you are also using red, you can combine this with "Boldwyr Intimidator." You can pay red mana to turn your opponents' creatures into cowards until the end of the turn. While Boldwyr Intimidator is on the battlefield, cowards cannot block warriors.

Should anything happen to your Swamps, you can always find other Swamps to use for the most part. When you think carefully about it, Fendeep Summoner does somewhat give you the ability to temporarily make 3/5 treefolk warrior creatures. If you have Boldwyr Intimidator, you can keep attacking and attack with those 3/5 treefolks produced by the Fendeep Summoner. Make sure you also have Doran, the Siege Tower to help out.

Overall, Fendeep Summoner is a great card. However, you want to build around a certain creature type to get the most out of the Fendeep Summoner. If you do, the Fendeep Summoner becomes a vital card.
