Most of us have to choose a profession at least once in our lifetime. We have lawyers, doctors, all sorts of other professions, and managers. Management is a very good profession to choose if you are a reliable, responsible, astute person who does not mind hard work and who is willing to be patient in achieving his goals.
A good manager is hard to find, so the salary paid to a manager is quite good. Some managers also get a bonus and car. It is a job where you can work your way up the ladder, so that what you earn and the amount of responsibility you have at the age of 40 is superior to that at 30. You must look at this as a long term thing as it is unlikely you could retire young. But it can give you a very comfortable lifestyle. If your boss really values you and you work for a boss who is fair, caring and nice, your working life can be quite comfortable and happy.
All managers need basic skills. The art of delegating to under staff. Especially when going on holiday or away due to sickness. They also need to be good at making decisions. Nobody who has trouble in deciding things can ever be a manager. They would keep second guessing their own decisions and make the wrong ones. They need the confidence to just work out what they think is best and stick to it. The brains to know what is best without getting it wrong. Especially when a lot of money is involved, or an important order. People who have a logical mind and do not get all intense and emotional usually make good managers.
Another skill a good manager has is the ability to get on well with people from all walks of life. The boss, Royalty, peasants, staff and customers must all be treated with dignity and respect. Charm is important, so is fairness and honesty. If he promises something he should stick to his promise and make sure he can as if he gets a reputation for letting people down it will eventually ruin his career.
Managers usually stick at a particular job for at least a few years. If they constantly chop and change and move about they get a bad resume and people will not trust them. It would not be worth their while to take them on, train them, give them all that responsibility, turn other managers away who wanted that job, and then find they move on again. If you are easily bored or are just wanting a challenge it is not for you. It is better to see the job as a way to settle in something for a long time and then take on the challenge of sorting out staff, increasing sales, sorting pricing and taking each part of the business and adjusting it or alterring it to make it as good as it can be. If you see the job this way you never tire of it and will be happy to stay. There are always things that can be improved its just a case of opening your eyes and seeing them. Even when it all seems sorted one of your staff may leave and your new challenge might be to find a suitable replacement and train them.
Management is an excellent profession for someone who wants a guaranteed income whilst being in control. But there is a lot of time, hardwork and responsibility involved.
