I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was human. I'm also going to say, and this will possibly stir up a hornets nest, that Jesus was also 'just' human. Now I can hear the intake of breath from everyone who ever called themselves a Christian but really, are we meant to believe that for 2,000 years we have been left alone by God to sort out our own mistakes I mean, will 'he' ever again send 'his son' to atone for our sins? We are after all not the same generation of that time and we have all made our fair share of mistakes, again.
I absolutely agree that Jesus is the 'light and the way' and a path we should follow; and doesn't that sound hypocritical, but hear me out when I say that Jesus did what many of us do when left alone with our thoughts. He called upon God to answer the many questions about 'his' life and the world around him and if you are familiar with another person in our lifetime that did just that through his conversations with the same 'higher being', then you'll see what I mean. The difference between Jesus and us 'normal' people is that he actually listened to his heart and felt the 'soul of the world' and that to him was 'God'. But guess what! There are many people now doing the exact same thing and becoming a light for others to follow. How long then, can Christians hold to this belief about the divine image of Mary?
It was foretold by a 'human' through 'divine inspiration' of the birth of a saviour. Whilst Christians believe this to be Jesus, there are other religions that believe it is yet to occur. To prove the Christians right, the other religions of the world have to be wrong! We often exalt humans because we do not understand miracles. However, what is your miracle is not necessarily mine and how I perceive things is not the way you might.
So, at the time of the birth of this child, Mary was in a barn with animals and gave birth to the child in the natural way. I can imagine it no different than that. And maybe, just maybe, she had her first love who was the real natural father and who shunned her and Joseph, hearing of this, wished to provide another way for Mary and so stayed with her and, I'm guessing here, it was during a time when unmarried women, especially pregnant ones were shamed... well you get the picture. Where is the proof that it was anything different except by the words of another that was passed verbally through the centuries until committed to print that was in turn translated by another. We are all inclined to write or translate with our own personal view included and because we are all very different the nature of how we tell a story will differ to the next persons.
Do not trust all that you read, see or hear. Challenge everything around you. Especially challenge anything that makes you think or slightly doubt. To follow blindly is to live your life according to another and that is by default. If you believe that Mary was the 'virgin' mother, I hope you do so out of absolute faith in the recordings of a life, many, many years before your own birth, trust that what you hear is the truth!
I will however, say thank you to Mary for teaching her son the values of life and to challenge what the world thinks. Jesus was a modern thinker in a time when the world was unsure of its place in the universe.
And Mary was just his mother. How proud of her son was she!
