"Luminescent Rain" is a green instant spell printed as a common for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Morningtide." This is perhaps one of the types of cards that should not have been printed as a common in the first place. If you have the right combination of cards, you can get a lot out of a card like Luminescent Rain. In a sense, Luminescent Rain should be on par with this common instant spell form "Urza's Saga" called "Congregate."
The converted mana cost for Luminescent Rain would be three. You need one green mana and two colorless mana to cast Luminescent Rain. For what Luminescent Rain can do, the casting cost is well worth it. Keep in mind that this is an instant spell and you can cast this from your hand at any given time. This is only good if you have a bunch of creatures let alone a specific type of creature.
What does Luminescent Rain do in the first place?
When you cast Luminescent Rain, you pick a creature type. For how many creatures of that type you have on the battlefield, you gain two life points. Say that you decided to choose the elf creature type and you have ten elves on the battlefield, you end up gaining twenty points of life. This goes good if you have a bunch of creatures on the battlefield of that type.
In a multicolored deck, you can use dragons, elves, or slivers. Dragons are a bit risky because of the high casting cost. Elves and slivers are a safe bet because of the generally low casting cost. In a deck with white creatures, you could pick a soldier or knight creature type.
In a multicolored deck, you can get a lot out of Luminescent Rain. Combined with black and white, you can get a lot out of it. You simply need the help of "Boon Reflection," "Sanguine Bond," "Tainted Sigil," and "Wound Reflection."
For example, say that you picked the sliver creature type and you manage to have at least thirteen of them on the battlefield, you can play Luminescent Rain and gain twenty-six points of life. Boon Reflection doubles it to fifty-two. You make an opponent lose fifty-two points of life via Sanguine Bond. Then, you sacrifice Tainted Sigil to gain fifty-two points of life and use Sanguine Bond to make another opponent lose that much life. Wound Reflection simply adds insult to the injury because they lose double the life they lost in that turn.
Overall, Luminescent Rain is a great card to have. It is a good way to gain life points provided that you have a deck built around a creature theme. With other cards, this spell becomes devastating to your opponents.
