Magic the Gathering card analysis: Oona's Blackguard

"Oona's Blackguard" is a 1/1 black faerie rogue printed as an uncommon for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Morningtide." This is one of the "tribal" cards. It is a card that is meant to help out a certain type of creature. In this case, Oona's Blackguard helps out rogue creatures. In this respect, you want to build a deck around faeries and rogues to get the most out of Oona's Blackguard.

The converted mana cost for Oona's Blackguard is two. You will need one black mana and one colorless mana to bring Oona's Blackguard from your hand and onto the battlefield. For what Oona's Blackguard can do, the converted mana cost is well worth it if you can bring it onto the battlefield early enough. To get the most out of Oona's Blackguard, you want to build around faeries let alone faerie rogues.

What does Oona's Blackguard do in the first place?

Oona's Blackguard has three amazing abilities. With the right cards, Oona's Blackguard is excellent for any control deck that uses black and blue. The first ability of Oona's Blackguard is that it has Flying. If your opponent does not have Flying creatures, s/he is probably taking a point of damage.

The second ability enables each other rogue that enters the battlefield to have a +1/+1 counter on it. In a sense, it does not seem much. But that +1/+1 counter does go a long way. Think of this as a means to somewhat strengthen your rogue creatures.

The third ability makes your opponents discard a card if they get hit by any of your creatures with a +1/+1 counter on it.

There are several methods to get use out of Oona's Blackguard. One would be joining it with "Oona, Queen of the Fae." It has this ability by paying one blue/black mana and X colorless mana to make an opponent Exile the top X cards in his/her library. Doing so lets you put X 1/1 blue and black faerie rogue tokens onto the battlefield with Flying. Combined with Oona's Blackguard, those rogue tokens will get a +1/+1 counter. They will be 2/2 with Flying.

Should they deal damage, they make opponents discard cards from their hands. In this respect, you get to combine this with "Megrim." Megrim will deal two points of damage to an opponent whenever s/he discards a card from his/her hand. If you manage to deal damage with any rogues with the +1/+1 counters, you make an opponent discard that many cards. You deal damage with four of them, the opponent discards four cards. Megrim will deal him/her eight points of damage.

Overall, Oona's Blackguard is a pretty decent creature card. With the right combination of cards, Oona's Blackguard becomes quite impressive. It becomes a vital card in a combination of cards.
