Reasons why some college students don't want part-time jobs

There are plenty of college students that work all throughout their college experience. Some of them do it out of financial necessity while others do it simply because they feel it is part of what they are supposed to be doing. Even if people are not in hard financial times, they may want to make a little bit of extra spending money in order to afford certain types of merchandise, entertainment or household items. Of course, some college students really do not want a part-time job during college. Here are a few thoughts on why this is the case for some students.

Enjoy their free time

Some college students do not seek a part-time job simply because they don't want to fill their time up with work that may or may not be very interesting to them. When students figure out the college lifestyle, they often find it to their liking, which can lead them to avoid anything that might infringe on their freedom to schedule certain activities. A job is an obligation and most college students understand that taking a job means that they are supposed to actually go to that job every time they are scheduled to work. Given a choice between a social event and working, some students will quickly choose the social.

Lack of financial pressure

Other students do not seek part-time jobs because they are not experiencing the same financial difficulties as some of their classmates. Some students are funded by their parents, and others are being funded by loans and grants. If a student does not feel a desperate need to make money in order to live, chances are a part-time job may not be on their immediate radar. In many situations college students seek part-time jobs because they must, not because it is their idea of a good time.

Distractions

Finally, some college students do not seek part-time jobs because they recognize the fact that they are in school and their education needs to be the focus of their energy and time. There are only so many hours in the day and when students have part-time jobs they have less flexibility with their class schedule and less time to do homework or study for tests and exams. College is a sacrifice and many students recognize that they should put as much energy as possible into their studies. They may experience some difficult financial times for a few years, but the belief and hope is that in the long term a college education will benefit them both as citizens and as earning professionals.
