Magic the Gathering card analysis: Notorious Throng

When I first saw the name of the card Notorious Throng I read it as Notorious Thong, I now realize that this would be a very different, card, most likely a piece of equipment for the goblin tribe rather than being a rouge card. I imagine it would give the creature equipped with it fear. On the other hand Notorious Throng is a blue card that puts fairy rogues into play.

Notorious Throng is a rare tribal sorcery from the morningtide expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs one blue and three colorless and lets you put x 1/1 black flying rouge fairy creatures into play where x is the amount of damage done to your opponent this turn. This can be a bit unreliable but if you are able to do any reasonable amount of damage this can easily be a good number of tokens.

More important in many ways though is its prowl ability. One of the few cards that has a higher prowl cost, if you have done damage with a rouge during the turn you may pay one blue and five colorless and while you still get X creatures you also take another turn after this one. This means that you are essence getting an extra turn for two colorless mana, this is a better cost in some ways than time walk, one of the best cards in the game of magic, and while you may not be able to reasonably cast this until turn six the truth is that in general you do not want to cast any type of extra turn spell until at late as possible. This is because more things happen in later turns, and by adding in the extra creatures it makes it not only far more likely that you will do damage during that next turn, but if you have drawn another Notorious Throng you will be more likely to be able to play it as well. This would also work for any ability to play cards from your graveyard.

In limited the extra turn is in some ways less valuable as there are generally more turns in the game, but the flying creatures are of more value, both because flying is less common in limited but because the extra creatures are also of value, letting you block a flying creature for multiple turns or wear down your opponent quickly.
