Mothers: Tips on taking time for yourself

There is no job harder than that of being a truly good mother. It is time-consuming, energy-draining, and sometimes, it can feel like it is under-appreciated and rather unrewarding. A woman can get very tired out and stressed if she is only caring for the needs of others constantly and never attending to her own. One of the most important things that a mother can do is to take time for herself. She can re-energize, refocus, and reinvigorate herself to keep on going and raising her family with renewed vigor. Many mothers have a hard time figuring out how to take time for themselves, though. If this is you, the following tips can help you to do exactly that, without neglecting the needs of your family at all.

Tip #1-Start a childcare trading system with a friend who is also a mother. Once per week, watch a close and trusted friend's children and have her watch yours in return. This way, both of you get to do something just for yourselves during this time. Don't give in to the temptation to stay and visit, this is your alone time. Arrange to get together with the kids some other time.

Tip #2-Have your spouse pitch in for a certain time each evening. Whether you both work outside the home, or one of you do, you are both putting in a full day. Have your spouse give you a reprieve in the evening so that you can take a bubble bath, read a book, watch your favorite television show, or do whatever you want to do just to unwind a bit. It is important to have this daily time to relax in the evenings before sleep and to prepare for the following busy day.

Tip #3-Naptime is your time! If your children are still pre-school age, keep them on a good napping schedule. This will give you at least an hour or so during the day to sit down and kick your feet up. You might be tempted to use this time to clean up from the morning, and that is okay to do, but take at least some of the time to take a deep breath and rest.

Tip #4-At least once per month, have a pampering day, just for you. Don't just relax at home, plan a day out, either alone or with a friend, and go to the salon or spa. Get a special treatment done, even if it's just an eyebrown wax for ten or so dollars. This will make you feel as beautiful as you are, and keeping your appearance up is very important to the way that you perceive yourself. This can actually increase your energy levels incredibly.

Tip #5-Find a fitness center that offers child care for your little ones. There are many available, and some even have their childcare areas in places that you can easily see in the windows and watch what your child is doing. This will give you a wonderful opportunity to get back into shape if your baby is relatively new and stay in shape if not. Working out also releases those "happy hormones" that every mother could do with an extra dose of!
