Whether in health or sickness, there is a very good reason as to why lemon, honey, and cinnamon, combined within hot liquid are a mixture that is almost guaranteed to improve your well being. Each one of these quiet wonder foods, has it's own wealth of nutritional, and medicinal, health benefits. Combined together in a hot drink they are able to help relieve and shorten the symptoms of colds, flu, sore throat, and other common bacterial or viral ailments.

Honey:

Honey is a powerful antioxidant that also has antibacterial properties within it. Studies are showing that honey can soothe a dry throat, and help to eliminate a cough, as well as any over the counter decongestant can. Honey can also be used to treat asthma, upset stomach, or be used as a salve on open cuts and burns. Known as a natural antiseptic honey is believed to improve human digestion tract health in a manner similar to yogurt. It is believed that the friendly bacteria within honey is what provides it's antibacterial properties.

A natural sugar honey is rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and phosphate. It also contains vitamin B and C, and is more easily digested than the more complex, refined sugars. At around sixty calories per tablespoon, honey contains about forty percent less calories than other sweeteners, such as refined sugar.

In a hot drink honey is a refreshing, and nutritious means of controlling a sore throat, or cough.

Lemon:

Lemons, and the juice that they contain within them, are another soothing hot drink to sip. Whether served in a glass of hot honey water, herbal tea, or sipped simply as lemon water, lemon is an excellent source of vitamin C. Because of their high vitamin C content they were actually highly valued back in days of yore as an effective measure to prevent the occurrence of Scurvy. Lemon juice is still used today to provide a rich source of Vitamin C during cold and flu outbreaks, but lemons have a second factor that makes them especially important in this area, they are a powerful diuretic. This means that lemons have the ability to help increase the rate at which fluids move through the body. This is very important for people with gout, liver or kidney illness. It is also very important for those individuals who are suffering from bacteria, or viral infections, as these need to be flushed as quickly as possible through the body. Any time that your body needs a little extra cleansing is a great time to add a little lemon into your diet plan.
