Self-esteem is something that is built. It doesn't come naturally to anyone. Parents can help promote self-esteem in their teens by following some simply guidelines. It is important that teenagers have high self-esteem so they don't fall in the many traps that are waiting for them in the world. Low self-esteem can cause teens to do things they don't really want to do. That is because they are looking for acceptance. It doesn't matter if the acceptance is good or bad as long as they get it.

Here are some ways that parents can promote self-esteem in their teens:

Sports

Encouraging your teen to join a sport or two can help greatly in promoting self-esteem. Being part of a team and keeping busy is one way to make sure that your teenager doesn't fall into the trap of low self-esteem and the trouble it can bring on. Being part of a sports team helps self-esteem because they are required to have good grades, they keep in better physical shape and they feel as though they are part of something special.

Eat Together

It is a proven fact that eating dinner together promotes self-esteem in teenagers. A family that eats together has much better communication. The dinner table is where many people talk about their day and discuss important issues. If you want to promote self-esteem in your teenager, start by having family dinner around the table.

Keep Communication Open

One of the most important things that will help build high self-esteem in teens is if their parents keep the lines of communication open. If your child feels that he/she can come to you with problems then he/she will. If you shut down the lines of communication, your teen will go elsewhere to find the answer they seek. This is not good for self-esteem. Teens need to know that they can talk to their parents in order to build self-esteem.

Activities

Make sure that you do activities with your teenager. Go to football games together. Go watch your teen in the school play. Do whatever you can to be supportive of your teenager. This is the best way for parents to promote self-esteem in their teens. Teens need to know that their parents are there cheering them on. It not only helps their self-esteem, it is fun to do.

Promoting self-esteem in a teen is not always the easiest thing to do. You have to be very careful not to step over certain boundaries or be to smothering. You can do this by following the tips above for promoting self-esteem in your teenager. If your teen has good self-esteem, he/she will not be as likely to get into trouble as those who have low self-esteem.
