How to get started in freelance travel writing

by Ruth Belena

Created on: October 23, 2009

Success in freelance travel writing can be achieved when you have established a good reputation and built up a strong portfolio of successful writing. To get started in travel writing you will need to write a great many articles and reliable reviews.

You can get started in freelance travel writing without leaving home, simply by writing for websites that pay you for sharing personal opinions and travel experiences.

* Begin by writing hotel reviews, and reviewing vacation resorts, based on your own travel experiences. Submit these to paid review sites and paid-to-write article sites.

* Participate at writing sites where you get upfront payments or payment for page views. Write local travel guides, if you live in a major city or tourist destination, or write articles on recommended day trips and places to visit.

* Write quality articles for the travel channels at Helium and at Associated Content. These big online writing communities will help you to become known for your travel writing. Earnings from page views and ad revenue will provide you with a reliable source of passive income when your articles perform well in search engine results.

While you travel you can be adding regular content to your online travel journal or blog.

* Create a travel blog and post regularly about places you visit, and of your travel experiences. Many travel companies will pay commission for bookings made through affiliate links and banners posted on a travel blog or webpage. Get a Google Adsense account, or join other ad programs, and make money from visitors who are interested in finding travel information from ads.

* Set up your own travel pages at HubPages, and create travel lenses at Squidoo. Both sites allow you to earn from Adsense and you can feature appropriate affiliate links. Become an Amazon affiliate so you can customize your pages to show links to travel titles, and earn commission on each sale.

When you are experienced in writing web content, and are fully competent in the use of keywords for search engine optimization, you will find many more opportunities for travel writing.

* Sell exclusive travel articles at Constant Content or similar article selling site.

* Look for travel writing projects at freelance job sites.

* Join webmaster forums, where members post requests for batches of articles, to find webmasters seeking travel topics.

Travel topics are highly lucrative for generating income online, so you should easily find travel sites, ezines and newsletter publishers seeking well written articles on topics relating to travel. Feature editors of print publications also use quality travel articles to increase ad revenue.

While you are getting started in freelance travel writing you can explore further options to combine travel and earning money. When you have acquired enough experience in writing on travel topics, and you are capable of writing good keyword content, you will achieve greater success in freelance travel writing.
