There are many different Terrier dog breeds recognized by the different kennel clubs around the world. This group of dogs was bred to hunt although today, many Terriers are more popular for their size and "cute" factor. Terriers are generally energetic and affectionate although they can be nippy depending upon the breed. While they all may be labeled "Terriers", each of these breeds are unique in their appearances and characteristics.
Airedale Terrier
The Airedale is the largest breed of the Terrier group. Formally known as the Waterside Terrier, this breed averages 45 pounds and has a shoulder height of about 23 inches.
American Staffordshire Terrier
At one time, the AKC allowed the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier to be shown together. But because the American Staffordshire Terrier is larger than the English version, this breed has become its own. In the UK, it is illegal to breed the American Staffordshire Terrier because of its feared nature.
Australian Terrier
This breed resembles a Yorkshire Terrier on a larger scale. Although it was recognized by the British Kennel Club in 1936 it didn't receive recognition from the AKC until 1960.
Austrian Short-Haired Pinscher
In its native country of Austria, this breed is known as the Osterreichischer Kurzhaariger Pinscher. It is rarely seen outside of its native land.
Bedlington Terrier
This breed has a distinct look that resembles that of a lamb. The Bedlington Terrier is an old breed of dog with lineage that traces back hundreds of years.
Border Terrier
This dog's name comes from its origination - the border between England and Scotland. This small dog averages 15 pounds and has a harsh, dense coat.
The Bull Terrier was bred as a fighting dog. Original Bull Terriers are said to have resembled the Staffordshire Bull Terrier until other breeds were introduced into its lineage. The Bull Terrier has a distinct look with the erect ears and small triangular shaped eyes.
The Cairn Terrier was once known as the Short-haired Skye Terrier. This is a popular dog breed around the world. These intelligent dogs are easy keepers that enjoy affection and human interaction.
Czesky Terrier
The Czesky Terrier is also known as the Bohemian Terrier. This small dog averages in weight from 13 to 20 pounds and has a shoulder height of about 13 inches.
Dandie Dinmont Terrier
This breed received its name from the Sir Walter Scott novel "Guy Mannering". The Dandie Dinmont Terrier
