Chitter shatter, extended jolly laughing and food munching are some reasons many movie viewers prefer a DVD movie at home. At home, movie lovers can set the lighting, save cash from concession stand junk food and have the ability to pause for bathroom breaks if needed. One setback may be that DVD releases are not new to theater releases. With the quality of many films leaving viewers feeling robbed, it may be wiser to just wait until new theater films are released on DVD. Maybe, one day, all movies can be direct to DVD like music CD's; only the economy will be able to dictate that.
With movie on-demand services, DVD in-the-mail subscription services and the lightening speed movies are premiering on HBO, viewers are enjoying movies that premiered three months prior in a movie theater in the convenience of home. More movie viewers are recognizing the speed of theater to home releases and have decided to just wait until it is available on DVD or cable. Depending on the reviews of movies, many movie viewers are skipping the theater and saving the cash to go on vacation. If the average couple went to the movies twice a month, spending an average of $45 dollars per date night, a minimum of $1000 can be saved for the year and put towards something of priority. Comfort, convenience and saving cash is becoming very important to today's consumer, and it is much, much cheaper and better to view movies at home. No distractions, just the viewer and the movie.
Everyday, people are looking for ways to save cash in this recession while still having fun. Entertainment and/or eating out is usually the first expense to go. Well, people can't stop eating, but they sure can skip on the new Nicolas Cage film to save a few dollars. Consumers are prioritizing what is important they spend their money on. At one point, direct to film movies were looked down upon as cash makers, but with the economic change in entertainment tastes, more big stars are doing direct to DVD and cable productions, and viewers are staying home to watch them. This could change the movie premiering norm.
The movie going experience has become occasional for many consumers; movie going seems to be driven by families and the adolescent. The preference for at-home movies is not only about saving cash, but the power of convenience and comfort which drives this preference. Some couples have grown closer by creating a routine of movie and dinner nights at home. Either they stop at the movie rental store or get a film in the mail, couples are getting together, choosing and making dinner, setting the mood and enjoying a nice movie at home together. What's even better is that, if the movie sucks they can turn it off, guilt free. So... with many people not only preferring to watch movies at home to save cash and add to their comfort, it is also bringing couples and families together one movie at a time. The power of choice and comfort is a powerful thing.
