Magic the Gathering card analysis: Thought Reflection

"Thought Reflection" is a blue enchantment spell printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Shadowmoor." It is one of the five "Reflection" enchantments which are set to double some effect or ability. The other four enchantments are: "Boon Reflection," "Mana Reflection," "Rage Reflection," and "Wound Reflection." For Thought Reflection, it seems to be good in a control deck for the most part. With the right combination of cards, Thought Reflection does become quite useful for the most part.

The converted mana cost for Thought Reflection is seven. You will need three blue mana and four colorless mana to bring Thought Reflection from your hand and onto the battlefield. For what Thought Reflection can do, the casting cost seems to be worth it to an extent. That is provided that you deck thrives upon drawing cards and so forth. Keep in mind that Thought Reflection is an enchantment spell. Any spell or ability that targets enchantments will affect Thought Reflection.

What does Thought Reflection do in the first place?

When this is on the battlefield, you get to draw double the cards you get to draw. One example would be that your basic draw step. You usually draw one card. Instead, you get to draw two cards. Think of this as a "Howling Mine" just for you. Howling Mine makes players draw an additional card during their draw step. However, there is much more to Thought Reflection than that. It says "if you would draw a card."

Whenever something causes you to draw a card, you get to draw two cards. If you get to draw two cards, you get to draw four cards. In short, you get to draw double the cards whenever you draw a card let alone however many cards. If you draw four cards, you end up drawing eight cards instead. However, this could be used against you unless you have cards such as "Graceful Adept," "Reliquary Tower," "Library of Leng," and/or "Spellbook" on the battlefield that ensures you have no maximum hand size. That keeps an opponent from using "Megrim" on you. But be careful, an opponent could have "Vicious Shadows" ready to use against you as well.

In such cases, this helps out if you have cards such as "Overbeing of Myth." Its power and toughness is equal to the number of cards in your hand. Thought Reflection definitely helps out in that case.

In a blue and green deck, you can combine Thought Reflection with the "Lorescale Coatl." Whenever you draw a card, you put a +1/+1 counter on the Lorescale Coatl. With Thought Reflection, you can draw two cards during your draw step. That puts two +1/+1 counters on the Lorescale Coatl. With a card such as Howling Mine in place, you draw four cards during your draw step. You have your normal draw step. Howling Mine causes you to draw another card. That would be two cards drawn. Thought Reflection doubles it to four. In this respect, you would have put four +1/+1 counters on Lorescale Coatl. Think of this as a means to beef up the Lorescale Coatl.

Overall, Thought Reflection is all right for the most part. However, you need the right combination of cards in order to do so for the most part. While drawing cards is great, you want to be able to play them. If you are low on mana, this will not help at all. With certain cards, Thought Reflection becomes extremely useful.
