Magic the Gathering card analysis: Borderland Behemoth

"Borderland Behemoth" is a 4/4 red giant warrior creature card printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Morningtide." This is a card that is meant for a "tribal theme." Tribal is a recent terminology introduced in Morningtide. A theme for creatures would be grouped as a tribe. It could be a tribe of elves, giants, rogues and so forth. In the case of Borderland Behemoth, you are encouraged to build a "tribe of giants."

The converted mana cost for Borderland Behemoth is seven. You will need two red mana and five colorless mana to bring Borderland Behemoth from your hand and onto the battlefield. However, it is still questionable on whether or not it is worth paying the actual mana cost. Unfortunately, red does not have much mana acceleration for the most part. In a pure red deck, you may have some problems. You will need help via acceleration with artifacts and enchantments to ensure that you can get Borderland Behemoth out in time.

What does Borderland Behemoth do in the first place?

Borderland Behemoth has two abilities. The first ability of the Borderland Behemoth is that it has Trample. If you attack and your opponent blocks, s/he may end up taking damage anyway. However, it is neither the only nor the main ability of the Borderland Behemoth.

The main ability of the Borderland Behemoth is that it get +4/+4 for each other giant on the battlefield you control. If you have three more giants on the battlefield, the Borderland Behemoth would get +12/+12. Effectively, it would be a 16/16 creature with Trample for the most part.

However, utilizing the main ability is tricky. You are practically forced to build a giant-themed deck. Giants are by no means cheap at all. Giants have an expensive mana cost in general. Giants that have a cheap mana cost tend to have drawbacks for the most part.

One good way to utilize the ability of Borderland Behemoth would be to group with with "Boldwyr Intimidator." It has an ability in which you can pay one red mana to make a target creature into a "coward." Cowards cannot block warriors. You can swing with Borderland Behemoth for at least eight points of combat damage.

There is also the enchantment called "Rage Reflection." That should give the Borderland Behemoth some massive power for a few turns until you can bring out your giant creatures. Rage Reflection gives your opponents Double Strike.

Overall, the Borderland Behemoth seems to be an all right card for the most part. However, it has the major drawback in which you need other giant cards on the battlefield to get good use out of Borderland Behemoth. In this respect, you need to build a giant deck carefully.
