Short stories: It was criminal

by Gavin Wyatt

Created on: October 22, 2009

The Long Beach building stood 3 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. The building's capacity had diminished in the last few years with more of the call volumes moving out of the country. The customers had noticed, and many did not care for the language barriers, and there angry phone calls would finally be transferred to this building. The barrage of filthy language, and hysterical screaming could be heard as echoes in each cubicle as the furious sounds would partially escape the ear piece of the agents.

As the building emptied though, the sound started to fade. Only 22 employees remained in the entire building, and demolition crews had started to move in to make the building lease worthy in floors 2, 3, and 4. Each floor contained a false floor above it to hide the spandrels and spider webs of wires connecting this building to the world. What became of interest are the three notes that told a story, hidden in an electrical box installed in the flooring.

As the demolition tore panels out and stacked them on pallets, one of the panels was grabbed by the Forman to check it for aluminum. Aluminum had a higher scrap value, and if these had aluminum frames, he would put a few of his guys on it. He ran a 12 man crew, and they had to have this floor done in 5 days. There was only one service elevator, which paced his progress. He already noticed that the trash was starting to pile up, illuminating the fact that his demo guys were moving faster that the trash pushers.

"Hurry up meat heads. Don't hold the damn elevator down there. By the time you get back to the doors, another cart can be coming out." He grabbed some plastic out of the work cart, and started to tape off the floor for dust, "God forbid that the cleaners have to actually clean" he thought and taped off the entrance. The panel!

He had gotten distracted and he grabbed the panel from his bench. He took his magnet and held it against the metal. It did not stick. "Bingo!" He said. It was aluminum and that is worth some money. He would have to pull the electrical box out of the bottom of this one. The wood paneling is then pulled from the top, and what would be left is about a pound and a half of aluminum. "Ho has been jamming paper in this thing?"

The first letter is hand written in a woman's writing. It said "Why didn't you leave me a note? Are we still doing this? I am so nervous, but in a good way! She keeps giving me those looks, like she knows. Does she know baby? You don't have to tell her about us, I know
