Waiting for Death
Slipping into and out of sleep
I lay, restless,
awaiting the call of Death.
He promises to take me soon;
Soon, but not yet.
Pain fades
And euphoria creeps in.
My thoughts are a hundred strangers
On the edge of my consciousness.
Still, I wait.
I can hear you breathing next to me
Though I can no longer remember
Your name.
We are strangers now,
But it doesn't matter
Because we are alone here
In this room.
Your silence comforts me
And gives me strength.
Together we enjoy the silence
As it stretches to eternity.
I no longer panic
At the loss of fallen memories.
I am at peace.
I wait for Death.
