Poetry: Near death

Waiting for Death

Slipping into and out of sleep

I lay, restless,

awaiting the call of Death.

He promises to take me soon;

Soon, but not yet.

Pain fades

And euphoria creeps in.

My thoughts are a hundred strangers

On the edge of my consciousness.

Still, I wait.

I can hear you breathing next to me

Though I can no longer remember

Your name.

We are strangers now,

But it doesn't matter

Because we are alone here

In this room.

Your silence comforts me

And gives me strength.

Together we enjoy the silence

As it stretches to eternity.

I no longer panic

At the loss of fallen memories.

I am at peace.

I wait for Death.
