What is life?

by Belinda Long

Created on: October 22, 2009

Life is an opportunity. For thousands of years people have been searching for a deeper answer. I myself, have searched long and hard, researched every different option and finally concluded that there are no right answers to this age old question. The best I can do, and the most realistic answer, is to say life is an opportunity.

It can be argued that this simple answer fits nicely into any religion or personal philosophy. If you are Christian or Catholic, life is an opportunity to follow God as closely as possible. Even if you have no religion, life is an opportunity to learn, to grow, to love. From the moment we are born into this world, to the moment we leave this world, we are learning, growing and changing. Both the mistakes and the triumphs we make will affect the generations to come. The opportunities to learn from our ancestors mistakes and triumphs are enormous. The opportunities to learn from those who live around us - immense.

Each of us contribute something, be it good or bad, to the world. Nothing is truly random because everything changes something. Everything we do either creates or dispels an opportunity for something. A single human being cannot exist as an entity in and of itself, living in but not affecting, the world around him or her. A newborn baby, who lives for mere moments after birth, affects his or her parents, nurses and doctors and therefore that life has meaning no matter how short that life was. A still born baby causes physical and emotional changes to moms body and evokes sadness from those who feel the loss of the child and therefore contributes.

Life is an opportunity. It is a chance to learn, grow, change the world and the people around us. It does not matter what you are born into, everyone has an opportunity to be great, though not everyone embraces it. Many people would disagree. They would ask that someone please point out these opportunities. But they are the opportunity. Their life is an opportunity. Perhaps it isn't an easy to find opportunity, but it is there if you look, improvise and learn from the mistakes you make and others make. Life is an opportunity to be a better person, to make someone else a better person, to change a life, create a life and unfortunately, take a life. What better answer is there?
