Should you mention your hobbies and interests in your resume?

Yes! Your interest and hobbies should be mentioned in your resume. Interest or hobbies makes the work easier for the employer to know who the employee really is, what he or she desires, wants and what interest the prospective employee and how to see if those issues in some extent complements the companies goals and objectives. It is expected that a job seeker have a resume with almost all (if not all) details pertaining to him or her; details like your job experience, your age, institutions attended, qualifications, contact address, hobbies and so many other details and skills regarding you as an individual looking to be employed and your area of job application.

When applying for a job as, for instance a newspaper columnist or a reporter, hobbies and interest like reading and writing, among other written requirements edges you closer to the job than someone with same qualifications but without any spelt out additional information. It is important to note that working in a job you enjoy doing and have some great interest produces greater productivity than a job that you do basically because of the salary and that is where job satisfaction comes into play and employers are eager to use this advantage to themselves and their companies hence writing such hobbies or interest related to your potential job, leaves a good amount of impression with the employer.

The mistake most people make in writing hobbies or interest in their resumes is that they write what does not strike any cord with their potential job. Many believe it doesn't count. Uninteresting hobbies are usually overlooked by the employer who wants to know more about his or her employee. Take health fitness for instance, when you are applying for a job that requires fitness, liveliness or other good body build on your part, you might just want to add such things as "running/exercising" in your resume as this to a reasonably extent strikes a cord with your employer and he or she comes know how health conscious you are. There are cases that many people have applied to be employed in the same job for a limited vacancy, has equal qualifications and certificates, even most times, attending the same schools. In this case, when the employer must have verified the resumes of all parties, he now looks for reasons to qualify and disqualify. In this case hobbies, interest and the rest comes into play.

Resume is a summary of everything about you and that is what your employer is looking for. Definitely "everything about you" and it involves your hobbies and interest alike. When an employer is looking for an employee, he wants to know to a reasonably extent about his or her employee as this will show the readiness of the potential employee to work and also show how far the employee can go to meet the goals and aspirations of the company. And as a saying goes "nothing is unachievable with passion". You cannot be employed when you are a complete novice to the job you are looking for and when you seem not to have any interest. You can attend school, get a certificate. But when the interest is not there, you tend to be always lousy and redundant in the job, because the job does not in anyway make you happy. Whatever makes you happy is a way of life for you and when you are happy, you are motivated to be innovative and this is what employers need generally about their employees which would be found in the hobbies or interest section of their resume.
