Christmas 2009: Gift ideas for grandma under $10

Sometimes shopping for grandma can be a little bit of a challenge. Older people such as grandparents may not be in a mode of life where they are thinking about acquiring a great deal of new possessions. This isn't to say that they are going to pass away tomorrow, but oftentimes they have reached a point in their life where they are less concerned about purchasing their next thing. Therefore, inexpensive gifts may be appropriate for the giver and the receiver. Here are a few ideas on Christmas gifts to get grandma that are under $10.

Picture time

Grandparents often love to get updates on their grandchildren, and it can be a great source of pride to show pictures of their grandkids to other people. Therefore, a nice Christmas gift might be updated pictures of the children. Sometimes this can be as simple as a school picture, but parents can also take a few candid shots or go to an inexpensive photography place in a department store. Frames could be included, but oftentimes grandparents have picture frames on hand.

Arts and crafts

Another nice Christmas gift for grandma might be something that is designed or built by a child or grandchild. This can include a picture that a child draws or some sort of artistic expression that has been put together by an adult, if they have some sort of special skill. Granted, not everyone has these sorts of abilities so people may want to shy away from this sort of gift if their talents lie in other areas.

Sentimental items

As people get older they tend to be a bit more sentimental about the past. Therefore, a nice gift might be something from grandma's childhood or early part of her life. This might be a simple antique or it might involve something that grandma owned when she was a child. With the expansion of online auction sites such as eBay, people have access to a much broader range of these types of items. Granted, some of these items can be a bit more than $10 so people have to use some level of discretion.

When people are buying something for grandma they should keep in mind that she is in a particular phase of life. If people are in doubt of what to get, it is not necessarily a bad thing to ask her what she would like for Christmas. She may be coy and suggest that she doesn't really need anything but there is always the possibility that she might give some good ideas that are also affordable.
