Called Home
You buried me on that cold and blusterous winter day.
The mourners had left but you chose to stay.
Snow swirled crazily about as you lingered at my grave.
So much pain and too much left to say.
You turned to leave, but you faltered and sank instead to your knees.
Your cries long repressed, escaped in a low howl that carried for centuries.
Anger and bitterness had consumed your every thought.
Unable to accept that I had lost the battle I had long fought.
I watched you from afar and wished for a different end.
But it no longer mattered and I could no longer pretend.
The tears shimmered down my cheeks and left a trail of pain.
My heart ached for our loss and what could never be again.
"I can not stay, my love," I whispered to your soul.
"You must let me go."
"I will always be near, just look to you heart
And you will know. "
I watched as wonder and grace filled your face.
And with a sense of awe, I saw the bitterness slowly began to erase
As I was serenaded by the songs of Angels as my soul was called home.
And I was at peace, for I knew my loved one would never be alone.
