Understanding how FarmVille levels work on Facebook

by Kate McKee

Created on: October 21, 2009

If you're a new farmer on facebook's farmville, you'll be wondering what the levels are all about, and how you're going to go about using them to your advantage. Here's a quick guide.

There are currently 70 levels on farmville. As you play the game, you gain experience points every time you plow a field, sow a crop, help a neighbor, or buy a building or decoration for your farm. These points accumulate and as they do, they bring you up to higher levels. So, the key to getting up through the levels is to do these things as often as you can. Levels are not related to farm coins, only to experience points. You can be at level fifteen and down to your last few coins, or you can be at level 6 and be quite well off. It all depends on how you manage your farm.

*What happens as you move through the levels?

As you move up through the levels, you unlock more and more crops, gifts, decorations and buildings, so it's crucial to aim high! For instance, at level one, you only have access to four crops (strawberries, wheat, soybeans and eggplant), none of which are very profitable. Your gifting options are very limited (cows, cherry, orange and apple trees). There's not much that you can buy in the buildings and decorations areas of the marketplace (a barn that you probably won't be able to pay for , and some fences). But look what you can do by the time you get to level fifteen! Your crop options have trebled. Now you can grow pumpkins, artichoke, rice, cotton, raspberries, aloe vera and cotton, in addition to your original four. You can send so many more gifts to your neighbors (plum, fig, peach, avocado, lemon, grapefruit, apricot, lime and banana trees, chickens, sheep, pigs, rabbits and ducks). Now it's possible to add tents, wells, fruit stands, tool sheds, grain silos, and workshops to your buildings collection, and the list of decorations available to you has grown hugely. And, most importantly, you have the option of expanding your farm, so that you can make more profits, plow more land, and gain more experience points that lead you onwards and upwards. At level thirty two, you find yourself with 31 crops to chose from, 24 gifting options and the means to expand to a 20x20 farm.

*How many points do you need to move up a level?

It's easy to move up through levels 1 to 8, as you'll get to a new level with every additional one hundred or so experience points. Things slow down as you progress through levels 9 to 15, when you'll need 500 to 600 points to move up a level.
