Terrorist threats against the United States and countries abroad have changed the way that airlines operate and the way that everyday citizens travel. The lines at security check points are long and restrictions on what passengers can bring aboard are strict. With the airlines now charging for each checked bag, however, many travelers are choosing to pack more into their carryon bag.
For the well-informed traveler this can save you both time and money, but only if you follow the guidelines set by the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA).With the long lists of requirements on size, number and prohibited items, packing can be a challenge. With the following tips however, you can sail through security and be confident your bag will fit safely in the cabin.
Size
The federal aviation administration specifies the size requirements that carryon luggage must adhere to. All carryon bags must be 45 linear inches or smaller. This means that the height plus the width plus the depth must equal to 45 inches or less. When packing, keep in mind that these measurements include any wheels, pockets and handles. Measure your bag after it is packed to be sure that those last minute items you stuffed into the outside pockets does not put you over.
Number
The carryon luggage requirements specify that each passenger is allowed to bring one carryon bag the size described above and one personal item. The personal item can be a purse, briefcase, camera bag, laptop bag, small book-bag style backpack, reading material or umbrella.
Dangerous Items
There are many items prohibited from carryon luggage including those items that can obviously be used as a weapon. Sharp objects including box cutters, ice picks, meat cleavers, sabers and swords are not allowed in carryon luggage and should be either left at home or included in your checked luggage. Be sure to keep any checked sharp objects wrapped to ensure the safety of airline baggage inspectors.
All firearms such as compressed air guns, flare guns (flares cannot be checked), pellet guns and starter pistols as well as any parts for any of these must be in checked baggage. Any explosive or flammable items are prohibited from both carryon and checked luggage.
Everyday Items
In addition to those obviously dangerous items, there are specific requirements on what a carryon bag cannot include. For those travelling with sporting goods, including bats, bow and arrow, golf clubs, hockey sticks, pool cues, ski poles and spear guns, these items
