As a celiac in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island eating in restaurants isn't as much of a challenge as it used to be. Many restaurants will accommodate requests for gluten free menu items and/or will be pleased to alter menu items or create special orders.
Brits Fish n Chips is a favourite of celiacs since they offer gluten-free battered fish deep fried in an exclusive fryer for celiacs - a real treat to have Fish n Chips! They also make their coleslaw and tartar sauce on site. According to the
PEI Celiac Association, "They use fresh fish and they peel their own potatoes. No coatings are used on the potatoes. When an order for GF fish comes they use El Peto All Purpose Flour and water to make the batter and this fish is fried in the same vats that they use for their plain fries. Their regular fish is cooked in a completely different vat and they have separate tongs."
Shaddy's Mediterranean Cusine has been listed as "Where to Eat in Canada." The food is delicious and they clearly mark on their menu GF - Gluten free items. It helps that the restaurant owner is celiac. Lebanese food is the main focus of the restaurant however they have a varied menu for picky eaters.
The Kitchen Witch Tea Room and Country crafts located just outside of Charlottetown on Long River Road route 262 at the intersection with Burlington road route 234, not far from Woodleigh Replicas [in Cavendish] and 10 minutes from Kensington offer gluten free menu items. According to PEI Celiac Association, "They have purchased a separate toaster oven etc. for preparing gluten free menu items. They are also aware of the need for spices and flavourings, such as vanilla, to be pure. Gluten free items include a meatloaf donair wrapped in a corn tortilla, bread and a gingerbread dessert with sauce. There are many other selections on the menu as well." They are now also making gluten-free bread to order for those that are camping and want to get a fresh loaf of bread.
The Merchantman Pub, Downtown Deli and Dundee Arms Inn all offer gluten free bread with meals, as well as food that will meet gluten free requirements. They can all be found at Lunch Online under PEI heading.
Wendy's Restaurants offer chili, potatoes and side salads while Swiss Chalet also has identified menu items for celiacs. Every day there are more restaurants offering gluten free menu items and/or listing them on their menus. If you are celiac and visiting Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, rest assured there are places that will meet your needs.
