As Christmas approaches, parents, siblings, and friends alike begin seeking that perfect gamers' gift. The choices abound as game developers plan releases just before Christmas in the hopes of catching shoppers' collective eyes. While choosing a legit racing game may seem daunting, the following games promise countless hours of death-defying, insurance-free driving for gamers.
Dirt 2 (PS3, Xbox360, Wii, PSP, DS)
Developer Codemasters brings the latest in an acclaimed series of games in the form of Dirt 2. Drawbacks of this version of a stellar series include a small number of cars and very few tuning options. The use of flashbacks carries over from Grid (also a good holiday purchase if you're racing fan doesn't already own it) with limitations based on difficulty level. As the name implies, this game takes place entirely on any number of different dirt surfaces from dry Utah dust to muddy Malaysian muck. If you're looking for a dynamic, impressive driving experience this is your best bet.
Forza Motorsport 3 (360)
The newest release in this Microsoft series offers a ton of content. Perhaps the defining feature of Forza comes in the form of the storefront where one can sell tuning set-ups, decals, car designs, and more. The off-track content, in fact, can overshadow the fact that a racing function exists. Similar to Dirt 2, a rewind feature provides the ability to correct driving errors. However, this rewind feature has no limits and can become more of a crutch than an aid. This game comes as the best option for the racer looking for precision tuning and overall content.
Need for Speed: Shift (PSP, 360, PS3)
This game comes from a series that has consistently produced less impressive games since its peak in the early 00's. However, the latest release takes a step in the right direction as it leaves the street racing scene behind and turns to the circuit track. The cockpit view provides impressive realistic views and an incredible ability to create the illusion of speed. However, the physics of crashes are disappointing and unlike Forza and Dirt 2, no rewind feature exists.
Need for Speed: Nitro (DS, Wii)
Similar to most games designed for the Wii and DS, Need for Speed: Nitro gears itself toward the younger crowd. Like previous editions, Nitro takes place on the streets of major cities. If you miss out on any of the above options or are looking for a kid-friendly racing game this option will suffice.
Other options include:
Cars Race-o-Rama (PSP, DS, Wii, 360, PS3)
Gran Turismo (PSP)
Monster 4X4 (Wii)
F1 2009 (PSP, Wii)
