How the Internet has damaged people's relationships

by Gary Maclean

Today, information on almost any topic or subject, is at our immediate grasp. We should be so excited to have such a tool as the Internet right there in our home. Besides answers, the Internet gives us games, magazines, puzzles, discounts, coupons and on and on; the list is endless. The list even includes something we should never have had access to. Some people will not even want to mention this availability. For some it is painful to discuss. It can be shameful, embarrassing, and even derogatory to ourselves to suggest we may have used this particular offering of the Internet. I am talking about pornography. Pornography in all it's forms, including the sites that help match people up for the sole purpose of random sex.

Just the simple use of even one of the many, many sites offering anything one could ever imagine in the way of sex, is enough to drive the non-using partner in a relationship, over the edge. The extreme descriptive photos, the bare films and the raw dialogue may be entertaining for someone single, but it is widely available, and utilized, by those in a committed relationship as well. When only one of the two people in the relationship use things like sexual match making sites, relationships can be irreversibly damaged.

The unchecked use of pornography on the Internet has certainly been at the basis of many a breakup and divorce. There are many stories of people separating and ultimately divorcing because of things that take place on the Internet. I know this personally because I was a victim of one of the earliest and rawest form of pornography use on the Internet. It was enough to crush my 17 year relationship with a wonderful, beautiful wife.

In the early 1990's my wife and I purchased our first personal computer. We immediately got hooked up for the World Wide Web, as it was known back then. In that time, there were actually idle moments on the computer. It was similar to a television broadcast station that would shut down operations in the early AM hours. As early in the Internet life as it was, it was not too early to introduce cyber sex to a world of unaware users.

There was a site that invited people to cyber chat with one another. That site even offered a chat world where you could talk directly to the target of your emotions. You could even go into a private chat room where no one else could see or listen in. It all sounded really fun, for the person not in a relationship. It is devastating to someone who is deeply involved in a sound, committed relationship though. It is even more damaging if what goes on in those private rooms is kept a secret from one partner of a relationship.

Many other forms of communication easily evolved from partaking in this Adult Chat World. Gifts through the mail, letters, telephone calls, even discreet meetings. We can all fall victim to the persuasions of the world and sex is one of the strongest of them all. Some will look at it as fantasy while others view it as a fully illegitimate relationship with someone outside the confines of their own partnership. Everyone is looking for something, the easier it is to get, the better.

Still today, the adult chat sites can easily be considered one of the most dangerous offerings of the Internet. With little self-control or oversight, any one of us could be the next one to fall prey to the pleasures of the electronic world. It takes a lot of self control to maintain vigilance over our own actions; but it has to be done. I truly believe the "for hooking up" sex sites are probably the one most devastating impact on any adult relationship today.

I am not talking about the match making sites where they are legitimately trying to help you find a mate for perhaps even a lifetime. I mean those sites that allow anyone to offer any pleasure they can think of, even for money, for even a one night stand. Fantasies of all kind, particularly sexual, can be satisfied through the Internet. Again, ideal for the single person, but this is how the Internet damages peoples relationships; by offering the off limits perversions to anyone who catches the words on their screen - even the strongly committed.
