Poetry: The masks we wear

by Jelani Gussine

Created on: October 20, 2009   Last Updated: October 21, 2009

Whether speaking on the phone

Or tackle a task

I change my shirt, shoes, coat

But I'm stuck with this mask

I'd like to take it off

and put it with the waste

But even when i get it off

Another's in it's place

They're heavy and ugly

And keeps me weary

If the judging would stop

I'd show you the real me

But the mask stays on

Each day and each night

In the car, on the bus

even when I take flight

Some masks are well built

Some are just a sore sight

Some tight some loose

Some fit just right

Some glow like candles

Some dull like a wreath

One day soon I'll show you

What's hidden underneath
