Navy Field is a MMO game that is free to download and play. After you register through the website of Navy Field www.navyfield.com or http://www.twowar.com/games/navyfield_index for the European version, you can download the client which is 460 MBs and after the download is finished; you need to download the patch too which is 22 MBs. After the installation, you can log in to the game and you appear in a neutral harbor.
The first ship class you can choose is Frigate (FF). You man your ship with sailors and go to the battle screen. It is better to complete some tutorial missions before you join the battle rooms. As you start a mission you feel like you are playing an Amiga game. The graphics are awful. After you complete the tutorial missions, you can choose to control and target the guns of your ship manually or automatically. The automatic targeting is less accurate than the manual but it is more convenient when you are in a room full of ships and you try to control your ship. With the manual targeting, the shots are more accurate and the spread is less. As you level up, you can buy a Destroyer (DD). You will spend time at this neutral harbor till you reach level 12.
At level 12, you can turn one of your sailors into a Bridge Operator (a ship needs at least one BO) and choose his nationality. You can choose between German, English, American and Japanese but the developers of the game are trying to add few more nations like Russia, Italy and France. After you select your BOs nationality, you can go to the harbor of the nation you selected. More ships will appear in your nation's harbor. Till level 28-30, you can only have a FF or a DD. DDs are very effective against subs (only if you have a Sonarman) but they don't have much chance against the other ships.
After level 28-30, you can get a Light Cruiser (CL). CLs are not very powerful but you can do more damage. You can also make a CL very good Anti-Air ship by equipping it with AA guns and AA gunners.
When you reach level 37-38, you can choose submarines. Submarines are silent and deadly but the bad part is that you can only join Great or Normal Battles. Sometimes you might need to wait for many minutes for one of those rooms. As you advance in the game, you can choose Heavy Cruisers (CA), Battle Cruisers (most people say they are Battleships but they are not), Aircraft Carriers (CV) and Battleships (BB). There are premium ships which you can buy with cash. The premium ships are very good and they have clear
