The key to starting any business is to have a passion for what you are doing. Ask yourself the following:
1. Do I love to travel?
2. Do I love to help people research and plan their travel?
3. Do I love to work with people, listening and gathering information?
4. Can I be available anytime of day to respond to inquiries/emergencies?
5. Do I have the start up financing to establish a business or buy into a business?
6. Am I willing to dedicate time in setting up a business and stick with it?
There are more questions however these questions should give you an indication on whether this is the business for you. Now you have decided to go forward, where should you start? First, consider your financial situation. If you have lots of money, then no worries. If not, you can decide to go with a home based operation to start. The simplest way to set up a travel business is to seek out an existing business that works with independent travel consultants as they can give you ready access to many tools and resources you will need.
One type of organization that offers instant access to setting up a travel business is TPI - Travel Professionals International. They provide a recognition with required associations, assist with licensing requirements, offer greater buyer power, and in-house training.
Be sure to do your research on companies considering how long they have been in business, what is their reputation, and do others enjoy working with them. After you have done your research on a company or a variety of companies talk to a few business people and ask their views. If after all that you are sure that you want to start a business, seek out an accountant, lawyer, and business development agency that helps small business in planning. There may even be a government program offered that will assist you in developing a business plan, marketing plan, or financial plan. Be sure to avail yourself of any and all resources to start your business.
Starting a business, even a travel business is difficult but if you do your research, plan well, and work hard you will be in the best position.
