Tips for shopping with your preteen girl

Shopping with your preteen girl can be both a rewarding and a bonding experience, but as with all things in life, it has its unique challenges. Unlike toddlers and young children, preteens have a distinct sense of style and expression that yearns to be explored and fostered, but often requires boundaries. Preteens are transitioning from little girls to teenagers and require special attention and considerations. If you follow these simple tips while shopping with your preteen, however, it is likely you will both leave the mall smiling with satisfaction.

Be Flexible, but Tough.

While shopping with your preteen girl, take care to retain an open-mind and encourage your preteen to select clothing that she feels expresses her individuality and creativity. Before you go shopping, it is beneficial to have an idea of what is and isn't appropriate for your preteen. If you find your preteen tends to gravitate towards clothing or accessories that are inappropriate for her age, try suggesting a funky scarf, vibrant polka dot pattern, or animal print accessory to help her channel her originality in a suitable way. If your effort to curb your preteens creativity in an appropriate way is met with resistance, it is important to hold strong to your convictions but retain a positive attitude.

Compromise is Key.

It is important to recognize that preteen girls are under constant pressure from a multitude of sources including magazines, peers, and other media sources to look and act a certain way. The girls on the airbrushed covers of Teen People and the most popular girls in school are often preteens guiding stars for how to dress and be cool. As a result, your preteen may gravitate towards trends you do not understand or particularly like. While you may not like the color, pattern, or style of the clothing you child selects, it is very important for your preteen to feel like you value her ideas and opinions. Allow her to experiment with different outfit options that you both approve of. At the end of the shopping day, it is important that you are both happy. Overall, compromise is the key to coming up with a wardrobe for your preteen that you both approve of.

Be Honest, but Not Brutal.

When your preteen asks you for your opinion regarding an outfit selection, it is very important that you give more than just negative feedback. If there is a particular element of your preteen's outfit that you do like or approve of, tell her that. Compliments here and there will help build her self-confidence. In addition, don't be afraid to offer an honest critique, but be ready to offer a suggestion you think you would both love that would make her look great.

Stick to a Budget and Set Aside Ample Time.

It is important that you establish a shopping budget for your preteen because it will teach her the value of a dollar. Additionally, it is pivotal that your preteen feels she is a priority during the shopping trip. Make sure you give your preteen your undivided attention while you are both at the mall. Finally, make sure you have set aside plenty of time for your shopping trip together. The last thing you want to have to do is rush through the shopping experience with your daughter because it is an opportunity for you and her to grow together.
