I haven't been everywhere, but I have made it to a few places in the tropics. Some of my favorite views and memories have come from that part of the world. I would always recommend that anyone who can make an effort to get the opportunity to visit the Caribbean. Most of the countries and islands look like the picture on a post card. They are generally lush with greenery and surrounded by beautiful water.
Key West may not technically fit here, but it is worth a mention. It's old houses and rather open lifestyles make it an intriguing place to spend a day or two exploring. Key West is more known for its culture than its beaches. A walk down almost any street is a step back in time. The presence of Hemmingway is prominent. Presidents spent time here. Chickens still prowl the neighborhood yards.
Nassau in the Bahamas is a great place to visit. If for no other reason, you need to just witness the frantic pace of cars. Don't forget they drive on the opposite side of the street from the U.S. Cars don't stop for pedestrians and frequently not for other cars either. There are great beaches here, but they tend to be a little crowded. Private islands in the Bahamas are spectacular, but you probably need to be on a cruise to experience one.
Georgetown, Grand Caymen is a facinating city. They farm sea turtles there. Take in the turtle farm. You won't be disappointed. The beaches are fabulous especially at the Ritz Carlton. Grand Caymen is known for the best snorkeling in the Caribbean.
Ocho Rios, Jamaica, is a city on a very mountainous island. Take a bike ride in Jamaica. It's exhilarating. You can start at the top and ride 8 or 10 miles to the bottom. The people here are over-the-top friendly. There are more wonderful beaches. You will leave saying things like: Ya mon, and irie. If you're into it, Jamaica is the rum capital of the world.
Cozumel is a little too developed for my taste, but the shopping is pretty good here. They will bargain if you like to do that. It has decent snorkeling at a reasonable price.
On the mainland of Mexico, there are a variety of ruins and native cultures to see and enjoy. There are many beaches available for whatever you like.
Belize is still a developing tourist nation. The Cayes are excellent for fishing, vacationing, swimming, snorkeling, or just sitting back and putting your feet up. Belize City can be a little daunting to a first time visitor. If must go into the city, pay the cost and take a cab. Make the cabby wait if you are going to an hour or less. This will insure you safe passage back to where you started. The Mayan ruins are worth the trip if you like history.
The Caribbean locations all like to take U.S. currency. Make sure you ask for change back in American, or you will come home with a pocket full of money you can't spend. Most areas have plenty of people who speak English, but they may fake that they don't if they believe it will give them an advantage.
