How to use classified advertising to target local markets

How to use classified advertising to target local markets is in the first instance about understanding what classified advertising is and how it works, subsequently about deciding where classified advertising is best placed to target local markets and finally about writing a classified ad which will prove most appealing to consumers.

Classified advertising is so-called simply because ads are often grouped together by the nature of the product which is being advertised and sold. This could be motor vehicles, household electrical items or any general category which any consumer looking for a particular product is most likely to consult. Classified advertising is also a very basic form of advertising in that classified ads consist usually only of one or two lines of text, often subject to a maximum word count. This means firstly that the advertiser will only have room for what is likely to be a very basic description of the product as well as a contact telephone number or e-mail address. It also means, however, that classified advertising is likely to be the cheapest form of advertising and thus affordable to the private individual and to smaller companies.

It is probably fair to say that the vast majority of people still think of classified advertising as being placed in mediums such as newspapers or magazines. While this indeed remains a very popular form of classified advertising, more and more in the present day it is also possible to include classified advertising on websites and blogs. This means that not only should anyone wishing their classified ad to target a local market consider the local newspaper, they should Google search for websites and blogs which are perhaps extremely relevant to their local community and perhaps offer classified advertising to local residents or small businesses. This could prove a far more effective form of classified advertising for targeting local markets as the ad will of course be visible twenty-four hours a day for the duration of the agreement, as opposed to being published perhaps but once in a local weekly newspaper.

Writing a classified ad to target the local market is about cleverly wording the ad. As space is likely to be limited, it is important to grab the browser's attention among what are likely to be many similar ads on the same page or site. One way of doing this is to try to start the ad with a letter as close to the beginning of the alphabet as possible, in the event that the ads may be listed alphabetically. It is also advisable to view the page on which one's ad is to appear either in a previous edition of the newspaper or on the website to see which ads stick out and why.

Classified advertising to target local markets remains a potentially costly business and thus it is vital that all necessary factors be considered if the campaign is to prove effective. The sale of the particular product or even success of the small business may depend entirely upon this concept.
