Have you ever thought that your Windows computer desktop seems rather bland? Are you tired of logging on to find the same old limited features on your system? Maybe you are sick of cluttered icons? There is an answer to your problems, and that answer is known as desktop customization. Through this article several ways to improve your desktop will be explained. We will explore icon docks, wallpapers, icon pictures, and hiding the task bar.
It is important to note that the tips listed here are to be used primarily with a Vista. While you can try them with XP, you do so at your own risk. It is also good to have basic knowledge of computers, such as deleting icons and things of that nature.
Icon docks are a great way to customize your desktop. Instead of having a cluttered screen, you can simply include a scrolling dock, which will allow you to remove all those pesky icons. One of the best docks you can find is known as Object Dock.[1] This neat tool organizes all your icons in a neat sidebar, which you can place on any edge of the desktop. The icons become large when highlighted. More neat features are included such as instant weather, a calendar, and an attractive clock. You can paste icons in the task bar, and organize them in any way see fit.
Another great dock is Rocket Dock[2]. This dock is similar to object dock, with the main difference being that it has less features, but also uses less memory.
Out of the two I would suggest using Object Dock. If you really want to customize your desktop however, you can use both in conjunction. This is interesting as it can allow you to have a bar at the top and left or right, giving your screen a unique look.
Next wallpapers will be discussed. Let's face it, the selection that comes with your computer is quite limited, so it may be necessary to seek out a more interesting and ascetic background. Freewallpapers[3] is a great starting source for backgrounds. If you are looking for something special it may be necessary to search around for a bit.
If you choose to keep icons on your desktop, you may find it interesting that you can change the icon pictures. A great place to start your search for icon pictures is CoolArchive[4]. You can also find other unique things at CoolArchive[4] such as fonts, textures, animations, bullets, and more!
If you have followed the previous steps, you may also wish to hide your task bar. In order to do this right click your task bar and go to properties. Now check the box that says "Auto hide task bar". Now, the task bar will remain hidden until you hover the mouse above it.
I hope that you have found the steps listed in this guide helpful, now perhaps you can stun the ladies and impress the guys with your ultra awesome desktop!
