Merchanting is quite a unique way of money making in Runescape. This method does not have anything to do with combat or skilling, in fact it takes a very small amount of effort to make tons of money. Basically, merchanting is buying items for a low price, then waiting for a while, and then selling those items for a higher price. The question remains though, how do you know when to buy and when to sell? Merchanting can also take other forms such as flipping items.
The G.E. is a treasure chest just waiting to be opened. If you can take advantage of it correctly then this can lead to millions a day. There are numerous types of merchanting, such as clan merchanting etc. I will only go into the ones that I feel are truly the best.
Section 1: Short term merchanting
Many people in Runescape are afraid of losing their money; this causes them to be hesitant about merchanting. Short term merchanting is great for beginners as it is very hard to lose money. First buy an item that is very stable, when I say stable I mean that the most it's ever risen by is maybe 100 gp, even that is a lot. The line should be almost straight if you look at the graph in the Grand Exchange database. An example of this would be the rune full helm, or rune scimitars, an item that is in high demand, but is stable. Buy as many of the item as you can for the lowest possible price. For example, say the minimum price for rune full helms was 20.7k, the medium price was 21k and the maximum price was 21.5k. You would want to try and buy the rune full helms for a price that is lower then the medium price but not so low it wouldn't sell. So in this example a good price to buy them at would be maybe 20.8k. If you have at least 2 million gp you should spend as much as you want to on these, however leave a few hundred thousand gp in case you want to buy food or something of that kind. OK, so now you've bought as many rune full helms as possible. (I'm going to use 100 of them just as an example). Anyway 100 rune full helms multiplied by 20.8k equals 2,080,000 gp. Or 2.08 million gp. Now wait for them to sell, this may take awhile depending on the time of day, any recent updates, etc. Once they sell put them back in the G.E. for regular price which is 21k in this case. Once they sell, you can reap your rewards. You're making a 200 gp profit off each helmet adding up to a total of a 20k profit. This is a very miniscule profit, but this was just for those beginner merchanters that were hesitant with this money
