How to get help when suffering with SAD (seasonal affective disorder)

Are you one of those people that get "blue" during the winter months? If so you may be suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Many people get depressed when the days get shorter and the weather gets brutal. They kind of feel like they are stuck and it affects their outlook on life and slows their activities.

If you are one of these people there are many steps that you can take to counter these feelings of depression, isolation and just a general feeling of being down.

Call a friend and make plans to meet up over coffee, walking the mall, even just watch a couple of tv shows and pop some popcorn. Wear extra layers and make a trip outside to rake some leaves, take a walk around the block, or build a snowman when the snow starts to fly.

Join the local gym, you can get some great exercise and meet new people. Even if you have to talk yourself into some activity it will make you feel less sluggish, and that feeling may last all day. Find an indoor hobby for those cold snowy days. Cooking or baking are good alternatives that your whole family may enjoy. Maybe you are feeling artistic, you can bring materials home or find a local studio offering lessons. I found it therapeutic just to write this article. If there is a question that has been bothering you, try a trip to the local library instead of referring to the Internet. Many of the activities we now include in our daily lives shut out other people.

Connect with some old friends and make plans to meet up in a sunny location. A cruise or trip to somewhere on the other side of the equator are great warm trips this time of year plus you get to catch up on old times. There is nothing as healing as a good laugh.

Call a therapist; whether it is a psychologist or psychiatrist they can offer you alternatives such as meditation, hypnosis or drug therapies. To find a professional you like and trust ask your group of friends or get a reference from your general practitioner. Remember that even though they are professionals you still make the choice, shop around until you find someone you like and trust. A healthy mind is as important as a healthy body.

Most importantly remember the season is short and longer days are just around the corner.
