Freelance writing is one of the toughest gigs. You work alone. The entire operation depends on how much work you put in. You will need to build your freelance writing job from the ground up. Not to completely deter you from taking on the freelance world of writing, but it is not for the squeemish. It's all up to you, therefore you need to be prepared to work very hard.
Here are ten writing tips to become a successful freelance writer:
Set a steady schedule
Get up early and work all day, five to seven days a week. Work hard and steady. Write every day and put in an equal amount of time working the other facets of your business. Freelance writing is not just about writing, it is also about networking, researching, scouring want ads, devising a plan, talking to clients, scheduling your day, and much more. At the end of every work day, plan your next day's schedule.
Tell everyone you are a writer
Tell everyone you know, everywhere you go that you are a writer. Network at parties, gatherings, tell all of your relatives. Tell all of your friends, and everyone you meet. Network on Internet social sites by telling all your friends you are a writer. Start a blog and promote it. Promote your writing abilities by linking your sites to other writer's sites. Other writers will be your biggest assets, not just your proud Mom.
Toughen up!
Thin -skinned writers end up taking editors and publishers comments too personally. When you are thin- skinned you will spend more time complaining than working. Listen to writers, editors and publishers comments. Look at as advice, and improve your writing skills. The better you are, the more work you will get.
Believe in yourself
Believe in your writing abilities. With the Internet have come thousands of opportunities for writers. But with that there are many more writers. It is up to you to write what you believe in, and to write well. Writing ten articles and promoting those will not make a steady freelance writing career. You have to believe in your product and put in the hard work as well.
Network with other writers
One of the most important things you must remember as a writer is to network with other writers. Network with writers in your chosen area of expertise. Join Internet groups, and chat with people.
Do not insult people
I had to learn this the hard way, do not write insulting notes, or comments to anyone. You will receive hatred in return. When you spread nasty comments, and notes around the Internet it is very detrimental
