Motivation: The key to successful weight loss

by Steven Caller

Losing weight is an uphill struggle at the best of times and you really could do without those pesky little temptations hiding round every corner. You really don't fancy that hour on the treadmill after work either so perhaps it's time to try a different approach. I am going to offer you some short, sharp tips on how to get motivated and stay motivated.

Do it with a friend: This works as you can both mutually bounce motivation off each other and pick each other up when motivation levels drop. It is therefore more interesting, competitive and social than going it alone. You can also join a club or society to meet new people and boost your chances of success.

Spice it up: Diet foods are really quite dull so why eat them. Try finding some recipes that are healthy and tasty. There are loads of ideas on the Internet and you can mix them up with spices and flavours that you enjoy. Spicy foods also increase metabolism which all helps burn more fat. You are far more likely to stick to a diet if you actually like the foods you are eating. To this effect, never purchase something if you feel obliged to eat healthily; instead, opt for a dish that is healthy and delicious.

Forget the treadmill: The treadmill would have to be the most boring piece of exercise equipment ever to come out of argos; it is quite simply dull and no wonder motivation is an issue. The best thing to do here would be to buy a pair of running shoes and run outdoors. There are many running clubs to join and this can help motivation tenfold. Meeting new people and trying new routes and tracks is a great way to add variety and give yourself a reason to keep turning up each week.

Treat yourself: Even the most motivated of people are going to struggle to cut out all of life's little pleasures so cut yourself a bit of slack; give in occasionally to avoid giving up the plan and ditching the diet. Allow yourself the occasional naughty dessert or pudding to boost your metabolism but try to ensure that you have earned it. e.g. having a slice of cheesecake after having burnt 800 calories on a run.

Following the tips in this article will help you to keep your eyes ont he prize and stay motivated. Motivation really is the key as the principles behind weight loss are all so simple. Get motivated by following the advice in this article and you will soon begin to feel better and look better.
