Crafts don't need to be expensive. There are many things around the home that can be used and recycled into some type of creative crafts. It is about having an open mind and a little bit of creativity. Let's look at some options.
*Toilet paper roll puppets
These are fun and easy to make with things that are typically in the house hold. Everyone probably has toilet paper, always save the rolls. They can be used for several inexpensive projects. Decorate and make puppets and have an afternoon puppet show. Save them and the children will play with them for hours.
*Make your own paper
This is easy, fun, and practical. The paper made is not like the paper one buys at the store, but it is perfect for home made cards and gift tags. Ask your friends and neighbors to save bits of paper, newspapers and let make one more stop before they hit the garbage bin.
*Crayon cookies
There is no need to toss away broken crayons. They can be melted into little round crayons that surprise with color. Don't worry if there aren't many crayons. It is acceptable to make only one cookie.
*Paper mache
A paper mache bowl is an inexpensive and fun way to serve wrapped treats. Use a balloon and cover only half. Allow it to dry and pop the balloon. Paint the bowl and enjoy the treats.
*Material scrap garland
Garland can be used to decorate for any occasion. Material scraps, old sheets, and all types of fabric can be used. They just need to be cut into strips 6 inches long and 1 inch wide. Tie them to a string with square knots and have strings of garland to use for any occasion.
*Tin can candle holders
Tin cans that vegetables and soups come in are plentiful and easy to gather from friends. Simple nail and same hammer can turn them into great little candle holders. Clean and dry the can. Draw out the design. Punch the design with the nail and insert a tea candle.
*Tin can art
Rolling out tin cans and using them as a paint canvas make really great wall art. The cost of the paint in minimal.
*Toilet paper roll napkin rings
Why not make dinner a special occasion with cloth napkins and crafted napkin rings? Toilet paper rolls are easy to cut to the proper size and can be embellished with a number of things to create an interesting napkin ring. It is good to see children find a practical use for a craft.
Learning to make something useful out of something used in a home is a talent we want to teach and encourage. It will help them be happy and productive. It will make the world a greener place. It will save the family money.
