Puzzled about what to get your favorite scribe for his or her birthday? The best gifts will inspire the writer, improve their skills, or help with some of the more practical aspects of the craft.
Occasionally, the creative well runs dry, so gifts that awaken the muse will be greatly appreciated. Inspiration comes in as many forms as there are writers; some may find peaceful music and serene surroundings stir their creative juices, while others are moved by chaotic background sounds and being around lots of people.
Experiences, whether cultural, culinary, literary, or sensual, can also kick the brain into high gear. Gift cards for places like museums or civic centers ensure that the person you're buying for will have the funds on hand if a favorite band comes to town, or if there's a must-see exhibit going on. Another benefit is that they might use the card for a new experiencesomething they wouldn't have bought a ticket for otherwise, but have always been curious about. There's nothing like doing something new to get those synapses firing.
Exotic or gourmet goodies can spice up a seemingly dead-end writing session. Again, go for something they wouldn't usually buy for themselves, like expensive chocolate shavings for ridiculously good hot chocolate, or gourmet snacks they can munch on while working.
Writers who work from home might appreciate a cushioned laptop support that allows them to work on the couch or bed if the mood strikes, or maybe a laptop cooling pad. Those who often write in public places like coffee shops might enjoy a stylish bag for their laptop or netbook.
On the practical side, a month's, or even year's, membership in a site that allows writers to bid on jobs adds to their employment options. Working for a new site can also give writers a mental boost; sometimes we don't realize how routine our days can become, simply because we don't leave our comfort zones.
An overlooked tool of the trade that might be immensely helpful to writers who work mainly online is a decent digital camera. It needn't be expensive, but if you're not a camera buff, you might want to read some reviews to pick out the best one for your price range. Many sites prefer that their writers add images to enhance articles, since they attract more readers.
Finally, a massage, either from the gift giver or a licensed professional, is a godsend for people who spend most of their days hunched over a keyboard. Of course, it's important to consider whether the gift recipient is comfortable with the concept. A scalp massage, often available at spas and some hair salons, might be a safer alternative if there is any doubt.
