With the Halloween market focused on those who are thin and fit, shopping for a Halloween costume can be quite an ordeal if you have more of a full figure. There is no need to get frustrated because there are several homemade costume ideas that will accommodate your curves. Not only will you save money, but will look great as you add your own personal touch to your costume.
Unisex Costumes
Gumball Machine - This is an easy costume to make for both men and women. Simply wear red pants or skirt. Then using a clear garbage bag and balloons, you can create a costume that is unique and clearly a show stopper. After cutting holes for your legs and arms, step in and begin filling with balloons. Next tuck the bag under the collar. Top it off with a red cap and voila!
Vampire - Men can adorn a suit with a red tie and add some fangs for an instant vampire look. They could also add a cape for a more traditional yet mysterious look.
Women can wear anything they feel dark and sexy in, such as a corset and a long skirt, and put in some fangs. If you like to sew, women could also wear a Renaissance style dress in dark colors. McCalls and Simplicity have several patterns to choose from.
Tourist - A tourist outfit is simple to put together. Wear a Hawaiian shirt with khaki shorts or pants. Sunglasses, a straw hat or visor, and zinc oxide on your nose is a way to add to the tourist look. Finally, add a camera around you neck to complete the look.
Owl - This could take some sewing skill by hand sewing fabric feathers to a sweat suit. You could also attack actual brown, white, and black feathers instead. To add feathers to your head, simply sew them onto a beanie. Finally, add large circle glasses and your costume is set.
Costumes for Women
Witch or Gypsy - There is a sewing pattern by Simplicity (2521) that has both a pattern for a witch or a gypsy. It comes in sizes 18W - 24W (FF) and 26W - 32W (GG). If you would prefer not to sew your costume, you could always wear a flowing skirt and shirt with sandals or boots. Add a pointy hat for a witch costume or a scarf for a gypsy costume. Another accessory for the gypsy costume would be lots of bangle bracelets.
Countess of Darkness - This is another outfit that may require some sewing skill. You can choose a medieval or renaissance dress pattern using dark colored fabric. Your make up can be dramatic with dark, mysterious colors around the eyes and red or black lipstick.
Mrs. Claus - Butterick has a pattern for a Mrs. Claus pattern
