What better way to celebrate Hallween than with a costume party. You get to decorate your house with all kinds of cool creepy stuff and watch scary movies. However if you have a group of friends like mine when you throw a costume party everyone chooses the option to not dress up and a few wear orange and black to be able to claim holiday spirit. The most popular excuse I have heard for not wearing a costume is that they had no ideas for one, but to remedy this, having a theme for your party gives people a frame to go by.
Your theme can be as simple as ghosts and goblins to a hobo party where everyone dresses up in ratty clothes makes themselves look dingy and they carry their stuff around on a bandana tied on a stick. The benefit of this party is that even if people on your guest list are on a limited budget they can still come up with a costume and have some fun with it.
Another popular theme is everything related to pirates including tavern ladies and distinguished gentlemen and ladies for the pirates to rob and have swashbuckeling matches with. All you need for these outfits is a pair of tight dark pants, a baggy light colored shirt and a belt or a long scarf to tie around your waist and a bandana on your head.
If you think your crowd would be a little more out going maybe you could pull off a more specific theme like picking a movie that you and your group love and decorate accordingly. For instance you could pick a cult classic because odds are your friends have been to at least one midnight viewing. Or you could just pick a genre like comedy horrors or westerns which are still easy to dress up for and it's really hard for people to say they don't want to dress like that out of their houses.
One of my personal favorites is a time period themed party where people dress up from different decades, and centuries. It gives people to break out some stuff out of their attics or make some really creative things. Basically when you make it simple and let your guests still be able to make their own choices they are more likely to go along. Just try to refrain from having a farm animal party - I have a feeling that may not go over to well.
