So you want to learn about writing to the Marketplace? That's a good step to take, because the Marketplace will not only help you gain more money, but it will help you gain more exposure as well. If you are willing to take some simple steps, you too can become a good writer that gets publishers to notice your work, and gets more page views as well.
The first thing you should do is to follow the rules of the Marketplace. That means you should be following the guidelines that the publishers are setting out in the assignment. If you can follow the rules, you are a little closer to getting published. You would be surprised how big a problem it can be for some writers to follow the rules of a publisher.
Make sure that your writing is following a good form, and has good information in it. Don't submit a piece that doesn't have paragraphs, or that doesn't follow standard English. Basically you should write the best article that you can, and don't submit it before proofreading, and then proofreading again. Even the smallest error can get your work tossed.
Follow the tone of the article that a publisher wants. If a publisher says they are a laid back producer of content that anyone can read, you should write something informative, but light. If the publisher is looking to put out content to a science club, you should write a more technical article instead.
Write on topics that you know about. You will write better and get more assignments published that way. This is more important for a Marketplace article because you are going to be writing with more pride. If you can't get published writing something that you know about, where are you going to get published? I know that I always tend to do my best work for a Marketplace publisher, and make sure that everything is perfect before I submit.
If you can follow these rules, you are going to do OK in the Marketplace. So much of what a publisher looks for is already spelled out for you, so just follow the guidelines. It can be the slightest deviance from those rules that can get your article tossed, so be careful, and always give your best effort. You represent yourself as well as Helium when you write for a publisher, so always put your best foot forward!
