Poetry: Poverty

by Elle Reyac

Created on: October 16, 2009

Time passes on
Ive written about this journey before
The coming and going
The incoming tide
And outgoing ships
At dusk

Friendships that create intimate secrets
Inseparable bonds
Unsaid promises
Signed with a pinky shake
And a kiss

Its disconcerting to look over
The past years
See the bridges Ive burned
In attempt
To find safety
In a selfish desire
To hold security
In a vain discourse
To move forward

And along the way I left you
Sleeping on that old couch
Kids playing in the background

You
Looking out the window
Looking straight at me
For the last time

You, in your diaper
Looking over your shoulder one last time
As your mother pulled you inside

And I cant help but realize
That you are still in those same places
Without safety
Without security
Without a foundation
To lay your head upon
And sleep soundly at night.

I wish I could fix you.

Because the newsreels keep coming
And that old street
Isnt getting any safer
The addicts aren't getting any less hungry
And the thieves pocketbooks
Any more full

I really, really wish I could fix you.
