Product reviews: Musselman's Homestyle Apple Sauce

Musselman's Home Style Natural unsweetened Apple Sauce is a favorite in some areas. Many food pantries distribute this product monthly to their patrons. For the most part however you will find this on store shelves throughout the northeastern U.S. as it is distributed from Bligerville, Pennsylvania. Musselman's product in general though do get some distribution to middle America but their market presence isn't as strong.

The Musselman's apple sauce can is a light green similar to the color you would expect to see on an early 1970's Pontiac your grandparents owned. There is a prominent field of yellow in the iddle which offsets a black banner with "Musselman's" in bold white. Just below the banner there is a rendering of what appears to be three red delicious apples in the prime of their life completely unaware they are about to be smashed to a pulp to become applesauce. Canned applesauce no less, perhaps they were bad apples that couldn't pass muster for fresh?

The can is steel, which is recyclable, and comes in a 15 ounce size for the most part although a few larger sizes are available primarily for commercial distribution. Each can has about three servings which are 1/2 cup. What is nice is that each serving is only 50 calories so this is not going to blow your diet even if you go overboard and eat the whole can. Each serving has only 13g of carbohydrates which is about 4% of the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance), and 8% of the RDA for daily fiber. Otherwise Musselman's apple sauce is noted as being a "significant source" of Vitamins A and C, as well as calcium and iron.

So far as the apple sauce itself goes it's not bad. it is healthier than the sweetened versions, but it just lacks a certain amount of taste. It isn't so bad as eating art class paste or anything like that, but it isn't all that great either. Most of the time there is that "mystery chunk" factor where you wonder, or hope, it is just some stem or seed that your tongue feels and not something far more disturbing. In all honesty there isn't much about this product that sets it apart from the competition other than the price, which is often reduced, so unless you're on a very tight budget or have damaged taste buds spend the extra twenty cents or so to get a better canned apple sauce.
