Product reviews: Del Monte canned sliced carrots

Del Monte carrots, like may Del Monte products have been a mainstay in the kitchen cupboards of countless people for generations. While Del Monte has several varieties of canned carrots, the sliced carrots are generally the most popular. That is the most popular with everyone except the kids that try to hide them under other food on their plate to avoid eating them.

The can is green, as are most Del Monte products, and the front label prominently displays a picture of an assortment of bright orange carrots against a subdued silhouette of a farm. One yellow badge on the bottom proudly announces there are only 5g of carbs per serving! Another yellow triangle on the top points you to great recipes on the back. All in all it is a pretty bland can, but it's a can of carrots so what were you expecting anyway, right? This is of course the 14 1/2 ounce can, other sizes have slight variations, as do cans going outside of the U.S. The contents of the can are basic; carrots, water, salt, and calcium chloride.

The 14 1/2 ounce can amounts to about 3 1/2 servings which is plenty for most average families. It goes without saying canned carrots are generally not the highlight of a meal. Each serving is 35 calories so these are supermodel friendly in case Kate Moss pops by for dinner. So far as the nutritional value goes, a serving has 13% of the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) of sodium, 3% of total carbohydrates, and 12% of the daily allowance of dietary fiber. The upside it meets 300% of a persons daily Vitamin A needs, 6% of the RDA for Vitamin C, and 2% so far as iron and calcium go.

All in all Del Monte canned sliced carrots are tolerable. There certainly are not as good as fresh carrots, sometimes no matter how you prepare them they come out mushy. The sodium is necessary because they are canned but it doesn't truly add to the flavor as the can states. For the most part you can expect a can of these to sit on your shelf until you're hard up to add color to the dinner plate or you forget to buy fresh carrots. Overall they are a 4 of 10, they would rank higher if they had a cool mascot like the Green Giant or Sprout.
