In "The Perks of Being a Wallflower", a coming of age novel by Stephen Chbosky, the author explores the emotions and temptations of an adolescent. This defining story of a boy trying to find himself and his new place in high school is a must read for anyone who has ever experienced love, temptation, and above all things, a dire need for something more in life than just mediocre friends.
Although Perks' is Chbosky's first novel, it has already acquired its own cult following. Most youth that have read this book have greatly related with Charlie, the main character, who struggles with his first year of high school. As he wanders through the halls of his high school, he constantly analyzes his peers and slowly begins to realize his need for true friends. Throughout the year, Charlie gains the friends he so desperately seeks in some unusual places, only to find that they are no ordinary teenagers. In a world of tape mixes, typewriters, and home made punk magazines, Charlie and his friends learn what it truly means to trust and to love, even when it seems impossible to do so.
If you have ever felt out of place or just confused with the conformity of high school, then you will love reading "The Perks of Being a Wallflower".
